Matthew Backlund

With over 18 years of experience in the Tri-Cities’ banking industry, Matt joined Community First Bank as our Chief Lending Officer in 2020. Over the course of his career, he has worked in retail banking, private banking and, most recently, in commercial banking. Matt has worked with companies of all sizes and scope; and has the experience and expertise needed to provide a variety of tailored financial solutions for our clients.

A homegrown Ellensburg native, Matt is a graduate of Washington State University and Pacific Coast Banking School. He uses his education and experience to lead his team in achieving highly efficient, client-centric financial solutions that are delivered locally.

Outside of the office, Matt remains deeply committed to the Tri-Cities. In addition to serving on numerous nonprofit boards, he enjoys spending time volunteering for Junior Achievement, as well as coaching local youth sports.

Russ Prince


As our Credit Manager, Russ acts as the primary approver for consumer and private banking loans. With over three decades of experience in the banking industry, hespecializes in developing commercial lending solutions for both large and small businesses.

A graduate of Eastern Washington University, Western Ag Credit School; Pacific Coast Banking School, Russ uses his expertise and education to assist business owners achieve their financial goals. He is passionate about working for a locally owned, community-focused bank and truly feels that working for Community First has been the highlight of his career.

Senior Agricultural Officer

Bill Shibley

A graduate of Oregon State University, Bill earned his degree in agricultural and resource economics before embarking on a career in agricultural lending. With over two decades of experience, he specializes in row crops, vineyards, wineries, tree fruit, hay, and wheat. Outside of the office, Bill has enjoyed sharing his knowledge of the industry through his role as a 4-H Club leader.

Although raised in Estacada, OR, Bill relocated to the Tri-Cities in 1994 and has remained an active member of the community ever since. When he is not spending time with his wife, Kim, and their four kids, he stays busy fulfilling his duties as Chairman of the Washington Wine Industry Foundation and as a member of the My Tri 2030 Agriculture Steering Committee.

Director of Credit Administration

Melissa Callaway

Melissa brings nearly 30 years of experience in the banking industry to her role as Director of Credit Administration. Over the course of her career, she has worked in the areas of mortgage lending, speculative residential construction, agricultural, upper market, corporate, and small to middle market lending.

With a degree in Business Administration from the University of Washington and an MBA from Texas A & M, Melissa uses her experience and education to assist business owners in achieving their financial goals. Native to the Tri-Cities, Melissa is proud of her deep roots in the community and passionate about supporting the local economy by working directly with clients as they navigate changing economic influences, work to grow their businesses, invest in new buildings and equipment, and transition ownership to the next generation.




Commercial Lending Team Leader

Cameron Stephens

As our Lending Team Leader, Cameron oversees the day-to-day operations of our commercial lending department, bringing with him nearly 20 years’ experience in the finance industry. Initially beginning his career in retail banking, he later transitioned to commercial lending in 2014 before going on to join Community First Bank in 2020.

Today, his focus is on building a strong team while ensuring our lenders and clients are set up for success. Originally from St. George, UT, Cameron –who now calls the Tri-Cities “home” –is an alumnus of Dixie State University and holds an MBA from Southern Utah University. Outside of the office, he can be found rooting on his favorite football team alongside his family, or on the field where he shares his love for the sport as a coach for local high school athletes.

Derek Brownson


As Vice President and Commercial/Ag Lender, Derek specializes in agriculture lending services such as crop, real estate, equipment financing, and lines of credit. With over 21 years in the banking industry and experience lending in five states, Derek understands the process and is committed to providing custom lending solutions for all types of businesses. Derek is actively involved in a variety organizations, such as the Pasco Chamber of Commerce and EWU Alumni Association. Go Eags! David Doak


David brings over 25 years of experience in the business and mortgage lending industry to his role as Vice President and Commercial Lender. He is committed to providing a seamless lending experience for all of his clients by providing constant communication throughout the process. As a former credit analyst, David understands the approval process and prioritizes being available and accessible to his clients as they navigate through the lending process. David specializes in Commercial Real Estate Loans, Residential Construction Loans, Equipment Financing and Lines of Credit. He and his wife, Marlo enjoy spending time with their two dog children, golfing, bowling, and the great outdoors.

Jesus Melendez


Jesus is passionate about being a true business partner and trusted advisor for his clients. Over 15 years of experience in the banking industry has given Jesus a true understanding of what it takes for a business to grow and prosper. Jesus is actively involved in his community and serves on the board of many local organizations, including: Kiwanis Club of Pasco, Lourdes Health Network, Pasco Young Life, and the Pasco Chamber of Commerce. When Jesus isn’t working he enjoys the outdoors, hunting, fishing, and watching his 12-year old triplet girls play Fast Pitch Softball throughout the state.
